I would like to use Drake & Josh, Nickelodeon and Disney shows as an example of positive research on children. Many times the negatives that children gain from watching television are brought to everyone’s attention. Not often do you hear about the positive influences that children gain from television. It is all about choices. Positive television shows must be chosen in order to receive positive results. On the other hand, if negative television shows are chosen, the results given will be negative as well. Parents have to be involved in the children’s day to day activities, even television viewing. Children that are unsupervised while watching television will linger throughout the channels and find things that are not so good for them to watch. They also have a tendency to repeat what they have seen, therefore, if they have viewed negativity they will more than likely repeat negative behaviors. If they view positive, they will more than likely repeat positive behaviors. All children should be encouraged to view shows that promote prosocial and other positive behaviors! Reference Wilson, B. (2008). Media and Children’s Aggression, Fear and Alturism.

  1. Shuketa,

Your post is so true!! Violence on television has a negative effect on the well being of children. These little lives are impacted in several significant ways. Children cannot distinguish between television and "the real world" and this makes them more susceptible to the violence they see on television.

Children spend many hours watching violence on television and because of this, their behaviors tend to reflect what they watch. In many families children are left alone between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. to tend to themselves until their parents return from work. Television becomes the mother, father, baby sitter and teacher all in one. It is estimated that children spend 22 to 28 hours per week watching television.
