“My Connections to Play” In our play we reveal what kind of people we are. Ovid Roman poet 43 BC–17 or 18 AD The debt we owe to the play of the imagination is incalculable. Carl Jung Swiss psychoanalyst 1875–1961 When I was younger, play was an everyday part of children’s lives. There were times we would go to the playground if weather permitted as well as free play inside the classroom where I loved to play dress-up! We had play time at home and at school. I think adults looked forward to children playing just as much as we did (children). I feel that play today is different from the play in which I engaged as a child. Children these days seem more advanced early in life as compared to my childhood generation. Children these days also rather play video games, computers, etc. Verses enjoying outside play as I did. I hope that adults would take time out to encourage more outside play and less television, games, etc. As an adult I still value play. I enjoy playing with my children, significant other and other family members. I love to take my children places such as Incredible Pizza and Chuck E Cheese just so I have a reason to play. Yes, I am a big kid at heart!!

  1. Shuketa,
It’s funny how times change, when I was growing up I looked forward to playing with my family, friends, outside, in the community etc. I had many choices of where and what kind of play I wanted to do; today’s children have very little or no play activities at school and then they go home and there is still no play How Sad! Today’s children get upset if you tell them to go outside and play; when we were growing up you had to drag us in from play. Children today are obese from the lack of physical activity and poor diets; it was very rare to see a fat child when I was growing up because we played so long and hard that we couldn’t help but be healthy.

  2. Shuketa,

I agree with you. Play is so different today than when were children. We played outside for hours on end. We had time to play in school and at home. Now, children have little to no play time at school. At home, children are more focused on electronic devices than playing outside for just fun. Even the electronic devices are focused on academic success. Children need more time to just be kids. This only a short part of their lifetime.

  3. Technology does play a part on the kids not going outside as much as I did as a kid. Children today are a lot more sassy now, than before, but kids definition of play is also different, they think playing video games is a form of play, rather than going outside and running around or being active is somewhat boring. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on play.

  4. Trinecia,
I think it would help children a great deal if their parents encouraged them to go outside and play. I think that would be the first step. I think that it is not the children's fault they are not interested in going out to play I think it is the society that we live in and all the other things they have to do. What do you think?
